Linda Bowen obtained a Masters degree in Computer Science and was a lecturer at a university in the United States before coming to New Zealand in 1989. She worked as an IT trainer and as team leader of training in local government before starting Essential Skills with John Williams in 2000. Linda has broad experience working in the technology training industry in New Zealand. Her roles in various organisations have included:

- Trainer and facilitator
- Help desk support
- Training project management
As a consultant and facilitator, Linda specialises in the training aspects of projects, and has expertise in the areas of training development, delivery, and documentation in Microsoft Office products, specialist software such as document management and customer relationship systems and technology change management.
